Rising energy costs are affecting families across Illinois, according to State Senator Chris Balkema (R-Pontiac). In a recent statement, Balkema addressed concerns from residents about the increasing difficulty of affording basic necessities such as food, gas, and housing due to higher utility bills.
Balkema attributed the current situation to previous policy decisions that removed reliable and affordable energy sources without providing practical alternatives. He stated this has left the state’s energy grid vulnerable and increased costs for consumers.
To address these issues, Balkema announced his support for several legislative measures:
Senate Bill 1234 would establish a task force to examine how state energy policies impact both affordability and reliability.
Senate Bill 1235 aims to remove restrictions on fossil fuel plants and allow new peaker plants to help meet demand.
Senate Bill 1236 seeks to reduce regulatory barriers that delay critical projects like the Lincoln Land Energy Center.
“My goal is simple: an energy system that’s dependable, sustainable, and affordable for Illinois families. I’m going to keep fighting for common-sense solutions that put people first,” said Balkema.
Balkema was elected in 2025 as a Republican representing Illinois’ 53rd Senate District, succeeding Thomas M. Bennett.
