The Town of Normal is addressing the aftermath of a mass gathering that occurred on September 29 near Illinois State University, which resulted in a fatality. Mayor Chris Koos described the event as a "pop-up party" promoted by individuals from outside the community.

“We are deeply disturbed by the ‘pop-up party’ that happened this weekend in Normal near Illinois State University,” said Koos, representing both the Town Council and residents. “These aren’t typical parties. This event was promoted by people outside our community and designed to attract people from miles away who don’t feel personal responsibility for their actions. This is unacceptable and we will not tolerate them in Normal."

Koos emphasized respect for lawful gatherings and highlighted ongoing collaboration with Illinois State University to maintain safety: “We respect the right to gather and celebrate. The Town of Normal and Illinois State University have a strong history of working together to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all. We will not allow this to diminish what we’ve worked so hard to accomplish.”

In response to the incident, Koos has contacted Illinois State University President Aondover Tarhule and the ISU student body president to discuss future steps aimed at preventing similar occurrences.

The mayor also thanked various agencies that assisted during the response over the weekend.
