The Urbana City Council recently discussed giving pay raises for the next mayor, alderman and city clerk at its regular meeting.

According to WAND 17 NewsMayor Diane Marlin proposed that these positions get a pay raise of 1% every year from 2021 through 2025 in an effort to keep up with inflation.

"Notwithstanding the challenging financial situation currently being experienced by the City and elsewhere," Marlin said. "The small salary increase I am proposing reflects a modest attempt to keep pace with inflation and to recognize the substantial personal time commitment required by these elected officers.”

If the pay raises are approved, the mayor’s salary would increase from $70,274 in 2020 to $70,977 in 2021; the city clerk’s salary would increase from $61,002 to $61,612; and each alderman’s salary would increase to $6,878 from $6,497.

Each of these positions will be up for election next April.
