This week, state Sen. Jason Barickman is calling attention to the Illinois State Fair and encouraging constituents to take part in the festivities.
"The Illinois State Fair runs today through Aug. 21st," Barickman said in a Thursday Facebook post.
The fair began on Aug. 11 with a preview night, when attendees got a preview of the fair and what the fairgrounds have to offer. Gates open at 7 p.m.
In addition to the animals, the state fair has much more to offer, a release from Illinois.gov said. Free entertainment stages, horse racing, wine tasting and more are among the entertainment options.
The first State Fair was held in Springfield in 1853, Illinois.gov said. It has a history that extends far beyond the capitol city. In fact, throughout its history, the State Fair has been held in a dozen cities.
