On February 3, the Town of Normal approved a reimbursement of up to $3 million for Rivian Automotive to install sewer infrastructure required for the company's plant expansion. The decision aims to facilitate Rivian's ongoing growth and investment as it expands operations west of Rivian Motorway in Normal.

The reimbursement will help cover costs associated with extending sewer lines just west of Rivian’s current manufacturing site. This infrastructure is necessary for the planned expansion, which is projected to increase production capacity, add warehouse space, and create more jobs in the region.

Initially, the Town had intended to manage the sewer construction project itself but postponed it due to other priorities and budget limitations. While $3 million was originally set aside for this purpose, estimates later rose to nearly $4 million because of increased project complexity.

Rivian filed plans last July with the Town to develop two lots on the west side of Rivian Motorway. The expansion involves a $200 million investment and covers approximately 2 million square feet. It will include a supplier park and may also support additional manufacturing activities.

The new sewer extension not only enables Rivian’s growth but also opens up more land for future development. This move positions Normal as an attractive location for businesses considering relocation or expansion.

"This public-private partnership is an example of how the Town invests in critical infrastructure improvements and illustrates the Town’s dedication to supporting Rivian's success as well as the long-term economic vitality of the community," according to a statement from town officials.
