September as National Sickle Cell Awareness Month

Designated the month of September as National Sickle Cell Awareness Month in 1983 to bring attention to the need for treatment and research of sickle cell disease. Impacting approximately 100,000 Americans and 20 million people worldwide, sickle cell is the most common inherited blood disorder in the United States.
