In a May 16 Facebook post, Rep. Jason Bunting (R-Springfield) spoke of Motorcycle Awareness Month.

"I was proud to support legislation in committee today which designates May as Motorcycle Awareness Month in Illinois," Bunting said. "Start seeing motorcycles and be safe out there!"

House Resolution 0255 was filed by Rep. Stephanie A, Kifowit on May 16. According to the Illinois General Assembly, it "Declares May of 2023 as Motorcycle Awareness Month in the State of Illinois. Recognizes the 36 years of ABATE of Illinois, Inc., the more than 352,318 registered motorcyclists statewide, and the continued role that Illinois serves as a leader in motorcycle safety, education, and awareness."

Gov. J.B. Pritzker issued a press release on May 8, acknowledging May as Motorcycle Awareness Month.

The Start Seeing Motorcycles campaign aims to raise awareness about the increased presence of motorcyclists on the roads during warmer weather. Motorcyclists are disproportionately involved in traffic crashes and fatalities.

In a recent press release aimed to highlight the importance of the campaign. ISP Division of Patrol Col. Margaret McGreal added to that objective.

"While motorcyclists are a statistically smaller portion of total roadway users, they represent a disproportionately higher number of fatalities on Illinois roadways," McGreal said.

Preliminary data reveals that in 2022, motorcycles accounted for over 11% of traffic fatalities, with 146 motorcyclist deaths out of a total of 1,270 traffic fatalities in Illinois. This indicates a decrease of 21 motorcycle-related deaths compared to the previous year.

"ISP reminds drivers to be aware of the vulnerabilities of motorcyclists and encourages riders to get quality rider training and wear proper gear," McGreal said.

"Thousands of riders enjoy Illinois by motorcycle. During the coming months, it's important to share the road, slow down and be aware of your surroundings," said Steve Travia, IDOT's Director of Highways and Chief Engineer. "By working together and following some simple rules, we can save lives."
