McLean County Unified School District No. 5 Board of Education met April 11.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

A McLean County Unit District No. 5 Board of Education meeting was held Tuesday, April 11, 2023, beginning at - 5:30pm (Sign up for public comments will be open from 4:15pm - 5:15pm) at the Normal West High School, 501 N Parkside Rd, Normal, IL 61761.

1. CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL

Members present: Kentrica Coleman, Jeremy DeHaai, Stan Gozur, Barry Hitchins, Alan Kalitzky, Kelly Pyle, Amy Roser. Members absent: None.

Also present: Superintendent Dr. Kristen Weikle, Assistant Superintendent Michelle Lamboley, Chief Financial Officer Martin Hickman, Attorney for the District M. Curt Richardson, Executive Director of Operations Joe Adelman, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Dr. Kristal Shelvin, Director of Human Resources Roger Baldwin, and Director of Communications/Community Relations Dayna Brown.

3. SUPERINTENDENT COMMENTS

Weikle thanked the community for its support in the recent election. The approval of the referendum will allow the district to reinstate several cuts that had been made, in an effort to reduce the growing deficit and allow the district to continue to provide extraordinary educational opportunities. Weikle outlined which cuts she recommended be reinstated and what goals the district has moving forward.

4. PUBLIC COMMENTS

Alex Williams spoke about the referendum, thanked the current board and focused on his goals as an incoming board member.

Juliet Lynd congratulated the board on the successful referendum and discussed the importance of language education.

5. ACTION

A Reinstate Previously Approved Reductions for the 23-24 School Year

Gozur moved and Coleman seconded to reinstate previously approved reductions for the 23-24 school year.

Roll Call: Ayes: Coleman, DeHaai, Gozur, Kalitzky, Pyle, Roser, Hitchins. Nays: None. Motion carried.

6. MOTION TO CLOSED SESSION

At 6:04 p.m. Gozur moved and Coleman seconded to adjourn to closed session to discuss the following matter according to the exceptions provided in the Open Meetings Act and specified as follows:

2(c)(1) The appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the public body or legal counsel for the public body, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee of the public body or against legal counsel for the public body to determine its validity and 2(c)(9) Student Disciplinary Cases.

Roll Call: Ayes: Coleman, DeHaai, Gozur, Kalitzky, Pyle, Roser, Hitchins. Nays: None. Motion carried.

At 6:23 p.m. closed session began.

7. RETURN TO PUBLIC SESSION

At 7:17p.m. Gozur moved and Roser seconded to return to public session.

Roll Call: Ayes: Coleman, DeHaai, Gozur, Kalitzky, Pyle, Roser, Hitchins. Nays: None. Motion carried.

8. ACTION

A. Student Disciplinary Action

Gozur moved and DeHaai seconded to amend the student disciplinary record for Student #50001587 to remove the one day out-of-school suspension on February 6, 2023.

Roll Call: Ayes: Coleman, DeHaai, Gozur, Kalitzky, Pyle, Roser, Hitchins. Nays: None. Motion carried.

9. ADJOURNMENT

At 7:18 p.m. the Board adjourned.
