Illinois Wesleyan clinches CCIW softball regular season title

The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team secured the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Regular Season Championship with a victory over Augustana College on Saturday, May 4. The Titans claimed their 18th regular season title and earned the No. 1 seed for the upcoming CCIW Tournament, which they will host.

In the first game against Augustana, Illinois Wesleyan won 4-2. The Titans took an early lead with runs in the first, third, and fifth innings. Freshman Hailey Milgazo initiated scoring with a single that led to a run. Sophomore Casey Wissmiller contributed with an RBI single in the first inning. Jen Kuhn doubled the lead in the third inning with a run-scoring hit.

Khoury and Turner added RBI singles in the fifth inning to extend IWU's lead to 4-0. Although Augustana managed a two-run homer in the seventh inning, sophomore Gianna Certa closed out the game with a strikeout to secure IWU's championship win.

Certa completed her conference regular season unbeaten, achieving a record of 15-2 overall and 8-0 in league games. She struck out seven batters while allowing only three hits.

In the second game, Augustana defeated Illinois Wesleyan 3-1 after gaining an early advantage with two runs in the first inning and another in the second. Sophomore Claire Post scored IWU's sole run with a solo home run in the fifth inning.

Sophomore Caroline Gatchell started for IWU, pitching five innings and allowing three runs on four hits. Freshman Mallory Holland provided two hitless innings of relief.

Despite outhitting Augustana 7-4 in game two, IWU fell short but maintained their top seed position for next week's tournament at Inspiration Field from May 9-11.
