The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team, ranked as the top seed, began its campaign in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament with a commanding 6-0 victory over fourth-seeded Millikin University. The game took place at Inspiration Field on Thursday, May 9.
The Titans' offense was sparked in the third inning when senior Megan Fontanetta and sophomore Anna Beckman walked. Although a groundout advanced them to scoring positions, it was Casey Wissmiller who made a significant impact. The sophomore hit her seventh home run of the season, propelling IWU to a 3-0 lead.
A rally continued with Khoury walking and singles from senior Bailey Turner and freshman JD Dowling loading the bases for freshman Elyssa Stenger. Stenger's single extended the Titans' lead to 6-0.
Overall, IWU recorded five hits compared to Millikin's four. Wissmiller contributed three RBIs while Stenger added two more. Sophomore Gianna Certa achieved her eighth shutout of the season by limiting Millikin to four hits and striking out three batters.
Following this win, Illinois Wesleyan will face either Augustana College or North Central College in their next match within the winners bracket.
