In a non-conference doubleheader, the Illinois Wesleyan University softball team faced Coe College on April 24. The Titans secured a win in the first game with a score of 2-1 but fell to the Kohawks 6-2 in the second game. Following these games, IWU holds a 22-9 overall record while Coe stands at 25-7.
In the first game, after an uneventful start, sophomore Gianna Certa made crucial back-to-back strikeouts to prevent Coe from scoring early. The stalemate was broken by junior Jen Kuhn's solo home run in the fourth inning. Coe managed to even the score in the fifth inning, but IWU regained their lead when Kuhn doubled to bring Anna Beckman home for a 2-1 victory. Certa pitched her 13th complete game of the season, allowing one run on five hits and striking out eight.
The second game saw Coe take an early lead of 3-0 within two innings. IWU scored their first run in the third inning through Beckman's efforts, followed by another run in the fourth inning thanks to Beckman's single bringing Bailey Turner home. However, Coe extended their lead with three more runs between the fifth and sixth innings and ultimately won 6-2. Caroline Gatchell pitched for IWU, allowing five runs over 4.1 innings and earning two strikeouts.
IWU will conclude its home stretch with a doubleheader against Carroll University on April 27 during Senior Day.
