Senator Chris Balkema of Channahon, Illinois, recently participated in a rally at the Capitol alongside numerous parents and children. The gathering aimed to oppose House Bill 2827, which proposes new regulations on homeschooling that could affect parental rights in the state.
“These regulations strip away the flexibility that allows Illinois families to successfully homeschool,” stated Senator Balkema. He expressed concerns that the bill undermines parents' ability to choose their children's educational paths. “Parents know their children best, and this bill undermines their right to choose the educational path that’s best for them. I cannot support legislation that diminishes their ability to do so.”
House Bill 2827 seeks to increase government oversight of homeschooling by introducing requirements such as extensive paperwork, testing, and curriculum mandates. These measures are seen by opponents as limiting parents' capacity to tailor education according to their children's specific needs.
“This bill is a textbook example of government overreach, creating red tape and obstacles for families who have chosen homeschooling as the best option for their children,” said Senator Balkema. “This is about the future of our families, and I will stand firm to protect their rights.”
Despite strong opposition from lawmakers and parents alike, HB 2827 was approved by the House Education Policy Committee with an 8-4 vote. The bill will now proceed to a full vote on the House floor. If it passes there, it will advance to the Senate before potentially reaching the Governor's desk.
Senator Balkema encourages constituents concerned about homeschooling and parental rights issues raised by HB 2827 to sign his petition available online or contact his office directly through phone or his website.
