The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team participated in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin doubleheader at Augustana College on Saturday, April 12. The Titans managed to split the series, securing a win in the first game but falling in the second.
In the first game, Illinois Wesleyan overcame a deficit to secure an 8-5 victory. Despite Augustana jumping to a 5-1 lead by the third inning, the Titans staged a comeback. Jack Flagg initiated the rally, with Matthew Hudik bringing him home with a base hit. As Jimmy Gurgone and Gage Wolfe contributed with key hits, the Titans found themselves within one run by the fifth inning. An error tied the game in the sixth, and a base hit by Flagg in the seventh allowed Illinois Wesleyan to take a 6-5 lead. Adding insurance, Tyler Woltman extended the lead with a single in the ninth. Brennan Tomhave, in relief of starter Will Davidsmeier, earned the win, while Cade Addis secured the save.
In the second game, the Titans scored early, but it was the Vikings who dominated, winning 17-4. Justin Gadomski recorded an RBI in the first for Illinois Wesleyan, but the Vikings quickly responded with seven runs in the bottom of the inning. The Titans could not catch up as Augustana expanded their lead with additional runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Despite the defeat, eight Titans recorded hits with Ben Ford delivering two RBIs.
Freshman Michael Gurgone started the second game for Illinois Wesleyan and was given the loss. The series concludes with a final game scheduled for April 13 at Horenberger Field.
