July unemployment data from the Illinois Department of Employment Security indicates that the state's unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.6%. Nonfarm payrolls saw a slight decrease, dropping by 2,500 to a total of 6,165,600 jobs. The June figures were also revised downward, shifting from an initially reported gain of 9,400 jobs to a loss of 2,300. The sectors with the most job growth in July included Construction (up 2,900), Trade, Transportation and Utilities (up 1,700), and Private Education and Health Services (up 1,100). Job losses occurred in Professional and Business Services (down 3,500), Government (down 2,900), and Leisure and Hospitality (down 1,200). Nationally, the unemployment rate increased slightly from 4.1% to 4.2%.

A new law affecting local governments was signed after passing both legislative chambers unanimously. Sponsored by Representative Jason Bunting and Senator Chris Balkema, Senate Bill 2044 allows local governments to use secure web-based signature platforms for official business. This applies to counties, townships, municipalities, park districts, conservation districts and other government units that choose this option.

"A bill I sponsored this spring along with Senator Chris Balkema to allow local governments to embrace modern signature technology was signed into law on Friday."

"Senate Bill 2044 changes state law to permit local governments to use a web-based signature so long as they are using a secure web-based platform. It applies to counties, townships, municipalities, park districts, conservation districts and other units of local governments who choose to utilize this option. This change will streamline processes for communities and residents."

"The bill passed both houses unanimously."

The Illinois Department of Transportation is preparing for winter by seeking applicants for snow-and-ice removal operator positions across the district. These seasonal roles involve operating snowplows and heavy equipment during winter weather events.

"It may be hot this week, but in just a few short months, the snow will be falling, and winter weather will be here before we know it! The Illinois Department of Transportation is already preparing for the season and is looking for dedicated individuals to join their team as winter snow-and-ice removal operators. These positions play a vital role in keeping our roads clear and safe for drivers during snowstorms, icy conditions, and other winter hazards."

"Opportunities are available at locations throughout the district...These seasonal positions often provide valuable experience for those interested in transportation or public works careers..."

"If you are dependable...this could be a great way to earn extra income this winter while serving your community. Check out the Illinois Department of Transportation’s website for current openings..."

Representative Bunting also highlighted recent efforts with family and friends harvesting sweet corn intended for donation to Chicagoland food banks.

"Recently our family and friends came together for a wonderful day in the fields, picking sweet corn for our donation to the Chicagoland food banks."

"The weather was perfect...We gathered a generous amount to share...It was not only a fun and fulfilling experience but also a reminder of the power of community..."

"Truly it was a wonderful day spent supporting a fantastic cause!"

The state’s current backlog of unpaid bills stands at $2.24 billion according to information from the Comptroller's office; last year at this time it was $1.9 billion awaiting payment. This does not include unfunded liabilities such as pension debt.

Bunting has served as State Representative since his election in 2023 representing Illinois' 106th House District after replacing Thomas Bennett.

Other statewide news includes ongoing litigation over gun regulations moving through appeals court; cost-saving tips as schools reopen; scientists reassessing threatened species lists; recognition for Starved Rock State Park; and waived licensing fees for retired health care workers who volunteer.
