Illinois residents 75 or older whose driver’s license expires in 2020 will have an extra year to renew.

According to state Keith Rep. Sommer (R-Mackinaw), the extension of the expiration date means that older drivers won’t have to go into a facility to renew their licenses. About 147,000 Illinois drivers qualify for the extension.

“Letters are being sent to drivers that qualify for this extension,” the state said. Drivers should keep the letter with them as proof of the extension, according to the state.

"In addition, driving records on the Secretary of State’s computer system have been updated to show the new 2021 expiration dates for qualified drivers, and law enforcement agencies both state and nationwide have been notified of the extended expiration dates.”

For drivers under the age of 75, renewal dates have been extended until Nov. 1, the state said.

“For those customers who must visit a facility, face masks are required,” the state said. "In addition, these customers are asked to be patient due to heavy volume and to be prepared to wait outside in various types of weather. This is due to social distancing, which limits the number of people inside a facility at one time.”
