The Illinois Wesleyan University athletic department is celebrating the 50th anniversary of NCAA Division III by sharing stories about the Titans and their history. The Gilbert family has played a significant role in this narrative, with siblings Tommy and Ellen Gilbert making notable contributions to the university's swimming program.
Tommy Gilbert, who graduated in 2012, was a key figure in IWU's swimming team. He earned four varsity letters and set records in several relay events. After his time as a student-athlete, Tommy transitioned into coaching roles at the university, eventually becoming a full-time assistant coach for the swim and dive programs.
Ellen Gilbert followed her brother's footsteps, inspired by his achievements and experiences at Illinois Wesleyan. "I remember being nine-years-old watching Tommy and his teammates competing," Ellen said. Her decision to attend IWU was influenced by its academic offerings and its Division III sports environment that allowed her to balance athletics with academics.
During Ellen's college search in 2018, head coach Teresa Fish took charge of her recruitment process while Tommy stepped back to ensure she found her own path. As siblings on the same team but in different roles, they managed both personal and professional relationships effectively.
"My favorite part about being coached by Tommy was knowing that I always had someone in my corner," Ellen shared. Under his guidance, she became one of IWU’s most decorated student-athletes with numerous awards including being named CCIW Swimmer of the Year twice.
Ellen now coaches at Funky Fish Swim Club but still cherishes her connection to IWU: "It was an honor to be a part of such a special program."
