The Illinois Wesleyan University men's basketball team secured a victory against Carroll University with a 72-66 win in Waukesha, Wisconsin. The match took place on Saturday afternoon, December 7, at the Van Male Fieldhouse. This victory improved the Titans' overall record to 7-1 and their College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) record to 1-1. Meanwhile, Carroll University's Pioneers fell to a 2-6 record overall and are yet to secure a win in the CCIW.
Ten players from the Titans contributed points during the game, with three achieving double digits. Senior Nick Roper led his team by scoring 14 points and securing eight rebounds. Seniors Hakim Williams and Harrison Wilmsen also performed well; Williams scored 13 points with seven rebounds and three assists, while Wilmsen added 11 points alongside nine rebounds.
Sophomore Mason Funk and senior Trey Bazzell each contributed nine points to the team's score.
Illinois Wesleyan achieved a shooting percentage of 42.6 from the floor, hitting 23 out of their 54 attempts. They made five successful three-point shots out of nineteen attempts and converted twenty-one out of twenty-nine free throws. The Titans dominated in rebounding with a total of fifty-one compared to Carroll's thirty-two.
Carroll University managed to shoot at a rate of thirty-four percent from the field, making twenty-two out of sixty-four attempts. From beyond the arc, they succeeded in eight out of twenty-seven tries but were only able to convert fourteen out of twenty-two free throw opportunities.
The Titans excelled in bench scoring (25-21) and points in the paint (30-24). In contrast, Carroll led in converting turnovers into points (20-15), second-chance scoring (14-7), and fastbreak opportunities (14-10).
Despite trailing by six points late in the game, Illinois Wesleyan managed to close this gap through strategic plays including contributions from freshman Josh Fridman who assisted Bazzell for an important triple shot reducing their deficit significantly.
