Valparaiso, Ind. – In the opening game of a three-game weekend MVC series, Illinois State overcame an early challenge from Valparaiso. The Redbirds secured a 2-1 win against the Beacons, raising their record to 14-25 overall and 7-7 in the MVC, reaching a .500 league standing.

Valparaiso took an early lead in the second inning with an RBI single. However, the Redbirds responded in the third inning. Addison Masching hit a double bringing in a run, followed by an RBI groundout from Adisyn Hopkins, ensuring a lead Illinois State would maintain.

The game highlighted strong performances from several Redbirds players. Delainey Bryant and Abby Knight each went 2-for-4, with Knight scoring a run, and Masching contributing a double and an RBI. Hopkins added another RBI to the tally.

Pitching also played a key role in the Redbirds' victory. Starting pitcher Hannah Meshnick delivered six innings, allowing only one run on four hits, walking two, and striking out five. Paige McLeod closed the game with a perfect inning, securing her first save of the season.

Both teams demonstrated effective defense, yet Illinois State displayed particular resilience by handling scoring threats efficiently. Notably, they threw out a runner at home and picked off another during the sixth inning.

The series continues on Saturday with the second game scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Valpo Softball Complex. Illinois State fans can follow updates on the team's official social media platforms or visit GoRedbirds.com for more information on games, merchandise, and events.
