The Illinois Wesleyan University men's volleyball team faced a challenging match against Carthage College, ranked fifth nationally, on Saturday afternoon. The game took place at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, Illinois. Despite their efforts, the Titans were defeated in straight sets with scores of 25-13, 25-17, and 25-18.
This loss brings Illinois Wesleyan's overall record to 10-6 and their conference record to 0-2. Meanwhile, Carthage College improved to an overall record of 11-2 and secured a 1-0 standing in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW).
Illinois Wesleyan struggled offensively, hitting .147 for the match compared to Carthage's impressive .500 hitting percentage. The Titans recorded a total of 27 kills, 24 digs, and two blocks during the match. In contrast, Carthage tallied 44 kills, 27 digs, and three blocks.
Freshman Gavin Rohlwing from Tower Lake led the Titans with eight kills on a .583 attacking percentage. Sophomore Bryce Williams contributed six kills while freshman Trey Marek added five. Sophomore Brendan Reutter provided support with 18 assists and tied for the team lead in digs alongside Williams, junior Jace Milka, and freshman Ben Zima.
In the third set, Illinois Wesleyan showed signs of improvement by hitting .318. They managed to tie the score at several points but ultimately could not maintain their momentum against Carthage's strong performance.
The Titans will travel to Chicago for their next CCIW matchup against North Park University on Wednesday evening at North Park Gymnasium.
